Most of us fell in love with Anne Hathaway when she played Mia Thermopolis in the classic ugly-duckling-turned-swan film The Princess Diaries. But before she became Princess of Genovia, she was the daughter of an actress and a lawyer. Born in Brooklyn, New York on November 12, 1982, she always had a love for theatre and excelled in performing arts early on. She became the first and only teen to be accepted into The Barrow Group, a theatre company and acting school in New York City.
She got her first television role in the series Get Real. The show only lasted one season, but she was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Not long after, Hathaway accepted the role that put her on the map in The Princess Diaries. She returned to play Mia for a sequel and also played the lead character in the film Ella Enchanted. Hathaway broke away from family-friendly films and was next seen in Havoc and Brokeback Mountain; in which she received rave reviews for both. The actress really showed us what she was made of in the popular film The Devil Wears Prada, where she rubbed elbows with Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt. She was also seen on the big screen in movies like Becoming Jane, Get Smart, Bride Wars, Valentine’s Day, Love and Other Drugs, Alice in Wonderland, and The Dark Knight Rises. She joined the big leagues, though, with her performance as Fantine in Les Miserables. She even earned a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, beating out Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, and Sally Field. She also won the Academy Award for this role.
Hathaway’s celebrity exes look more like a list of the hottest men alive. In 1999, she began dating actor Topher Grace; although they made a cute couple, they broke up after three years together. She then moved on to restaurateur Scott Sartiano for a quick fling. Hugh Dancy was Hathaway’s next long-term celebrity relationship, and they dated for two years. Next, she dated Raffaello Follieri, an Italian real estate developer who made celebrity news when the IRS began an open investigation on his Manhattan-based charity. She dumped him after four years together, reportedly fearing that the bad press would affect her career. She was then rumored to be with retired soccer player Francesco Coco and actor Josh Lucas. In November 2008, Hathaway told the press, “This guy I know in L.A. is really doing it for me right now.” That guy was Adam Shulman, and the two celebrated their celebrity wedding in September 2012.
